Coracle harnesses the latest IT methods to deliver TutorShip courses
Students preparing for the ICS examinations can now take advantage of an e-learning option, allowing the TutorShip course book text to be delivered through up-to-date IT techniques. Launched on 19 September, the e-learning programme is an exciting development that demonstrates the ICS commitment to remaining relevant as an increasingly respected education and training provider to the shipping community worldwide.
As the chairman of the ICS Education and Training Committee, Tony Dixon has expressed delight that Coracle is offering a new and engaging alternative for students looking to study for their professional qualifying exams in shipping, leading to membership of the ICS.
The following subjects from the ICS syllabus can be studied online: Introduction to Shipping, Economics of Sea Transport, Legal Principles of Shipping, Shipping Business, S&P, Port Agency and Dry Cargo Chartering. For more information, log on to www.coracleonline.com.
A one-day introductory Liner Trades course, directed at employees of liner shipping operators, liner agents, students studying for NVCQs as well as importers and exporters, is now available. The course offers a brief introduction to the whole field of liner trade operations as well as liner cargoes and the way in which the terms of sale of goods impact on the liner transport contract.
This is an excellent introduction into the Foundation Diploma (Liner Trades) which in itself is a very good lead into the Professional Qualifications Examinations.
The Institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy to enhance cooperation between the two organisations.
The MoU will help market, to the mutual benefit of the two organisations, to a broader audience, while also introducing LMA graduates to the benefits of ICS membership. Further details of the LMA’s excellent courses can be found at www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com.
Italian aims Italy’s new distance learning centre aims to have a minimum 100 students in its first year of activity. First off, it will deliver the Understanding Shipping course, following on with the Introduction to Shipping course, with the purpose of driving students either toward the Foundation Diploma or qualifying examinations.

The complete set of 14 TutorShip course books has now been published and is available to purchase from Witherbys at www.witherbys.com.
This includes the newest syllabus addition, Port and Terminal Management, with exams planned for 2008. Also, the Institute’s approved reading list is available on the Institute’s website. Two recent additions are William Packard’s updated versions of Cargoes and S&P.
The Director and Chairman of the Education and Training Committee took the opportunity to brief the Finnish Shipbrokers’ Association at its Nordic meeting in Helsinki in August on the Institute’s education and training aspects. The feedback was very positive and the association was particularly keen on the Liner Trades course that could lead on to the Foundation Diploma.
Feedback from this year’s education seminar was extremely positive and plans are to request Education Fund trustees’ support for a repeat in London next May. Said tutor Bill Simper: “It was a great pleasure to attend and meet fellow tutors. It was particularly pleasing to note the greatly increased level of interest and attendance from members around the world.”
